Many of the systems that are used to perform computational analyses – such as the EMBL compute cluster – run on a Linux operating system and require interaction via the command line. Mac computers also run on a similar architecture, sharing most of the features of Linux environments. An understanding of these environments and the skills and tools required to make use of them, can improve the efficiency of your work and help to prevent errors in your data analysis.
This course will provide an introduction to the most basic UNIX (linux/Mac OS X) commands and by the end of the course the participants should be confident and competent in navigating around a linux filesystem, performing basic file operations and finding help on the commandline.
The course will follow the course materials available here. Participants will be asked to independently go through the setup instructions prior to the course. If you have any questions, please contact Bio-IT.
Bio-IT is also plaaning to facilitate your participation to next CodeRefinery workshop, which follows up on the material taught here: if you are unfamiliar with the command line, it is strongly recommended that you take this beginners course before attending the CodeRefinery one, which will go through the use of version control (git) also for collaborative work.
Maximum capacity for the course is 30 participants and registration is required to secure a place.
