The course will take place on five mornings:

  • Friday, 22 November 2024, 09:00 – 12:00 CET (optional introduction to R)
  • Monday, 25 November 2024, 09:00 – 13:00 CET
  • Tuesday, 26 November 2024, 09:00 – 13:00 CET
  • Wednesday, 27 November 2024, 09:00 – 13:00 CET
  • Thursday, 28 November 2024, 09:00 – 13:00 CET

Each day consists of lectures and practical demonstrations in R, as well as tutored exercises.

Content

This course teaches basic statistical concepts that will help you to

  • better understand your data, and
  • interpret statistical results from publications.

They are also the foundation for many advanced topics.

We’ll cover the following topics:

  • Getting started in R (optional)
  • What are common statistical distributions of biological data?
  • What distribution do my data follow?
  • How do statistical tests work in general?
  • Tests for comparing two groups
  • How can we measure association of categorical variables?
  • What is multiple testing and how can we correct for it?
  • What are statistical models and how are they applied?

Prerequisites

  • Pre-installed R and R-Studio
  • We are going to work in R. For those who are new to R, this course starts with an (optional) introduction to R on Friday, 22 November, 9-12 CET. Alternatively, you can complete a ~2h online tutorial for preparation.

Location

The course will take place in the ATC FlexLabs in Heidelberg.

Notes

We will be working in R, but we will not learn – nor require – advanced programming. The focus of the course is on the statistical concepts.
