Schedule

The workshop will take place on 15 May, 10:00 – 15:00 CEST

  • Morning session: 10:00 – 12:00 CEST
  • Afternoon session: 13:00 – 15:00 CEST

This hands-on workshop addresses two critical aspects of successful research: experimental design and data management. Both elements require careful consideration during the planning phase to ensure your experiments yield reliable, analyzable data and follow FAIR principles (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability). Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, you’ll learn how to design robust experiments and implement effective data management strategies.

What will I learn?

  • Creating representative samples and handling missing values
  • Understanding sample size requirements and statistical power concepts
  • Distinguishing between biological and technical replicates
  • Identifying and controlling for confounding variables
  • Implementing essential design techniques: blocking, randomization, and balancing
  • Navigating the data life cycle
  • Developing effective data management plans
  • Applying FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable)
  • Understanding the interplay between experimental design and data management
  • Practical implementation in LabID: organizing replicates, managing metadata, and handling complex multimodal data
  • How to use the Data Management Application (DMA) to organise data and perform various low-level operations on it

Is this course for me?

The course is open for all EMBL researchers and staff planning new experiments. This workshop requires active participation—cameras on, please! The workshop includes presentations and discussions where you’ll have the opportunity to discuss concepts with regards to your own experimental plans and receive feedback from instructors and peers.
