Date/Time
Date(s) - 2024-06-17 - 2024-06-18
14:00 CEST - 18:00 CEST

Schedule

The course will take place on two afternoons:

  • Monday, 17 June 2024, 14:00 – 18:00 CET
  • Tuesday, 18 June 2024, 14:00 – 18:00 CET

Each day consists of lectures and practical demonstrations in COPASI , as well as tutored exercises.

Content

This course teaches the theoretical and practical basics of translating the knowledge or hypothesis about the mechanisms in place in a biological system into a mathematical model and how to simulate and analyse the model.

The course will equip you with insights into concepts and terminology of this type of mathematical modelling and with that also provide the basis for an efficient communication with modellers.

Day 1

  • Translating a hypothesis about a mechanism into a dynamical model
  • Analysis of process dynamics
  • Practical using COPASI

Day 2

  • Analysis of stationary states
  • Analysis of input-output characteristics
  • Practical using COPASI

Prerequisites

We will use the software COPASI which comes with a graphical user interface (GUI). No programming skills are required.

You will need your own laptop with the newest version of COPASI installed.

In kinetic modelling ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are used to describe the dynamics of a biological system. However, it is NOT necessary for you to know how to solve ODEs. We will have COPASI do the solving for us numerically.

Location

The course will take place in B14 in Rome.
