Scope

In the ‘EMBL Train-the-Trainer’ workshop, we aim to provide:

  • tips for delivering and developing training with the focus on live training (in-person or virtual formats)
  • guidance on general training techniques and appropriate use of methods based on learner needs, including some general ‘DO’s’ and ‘DON’Ts’ for successful training
  • a framework for successful curriculum design and further development, to enable trainers to build a course appropriate to their learners’ needs

After the completion of the ‘Train-the-Trainer’ workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • list ways to engage learners and keep them motivated
  • use of a variety of training methods to effectively teach content
  • outline evaluation and feedback methods to assess learning
  • apply reflective practice to training

Programme

Date Topic
Day 1 – 4th September The theory of learning and planning training
Day 2 – 5th September Developing and sharing FAIR training materials
Day 3 – 6th September Delivering training and integrating feedback
Day 4 – 7th September Teaching technical skills and through live coding

All sessions will happen at 13:30 – 17:30 German time, 12:30 – 16:30 UK time.
Please note: day 4 is an optional module designed for trainers that teach coding or other technical IT skills.

Registration

If the course is oversubscribed, we will try to maximise diversity of participants in terms of previous experience, opportunities to use the training skills acquired, opportunities to get similar training in other contexts, gender and role in the institution. We encourage you to provide us some information about all of these in the short motivation statement in the form.

A waiting list is also available, both in the case you cannot attend this specific edition but you would like to be notified about the next ones, and if the course is fully booked.

The TtT workshop will be held in a hybrid format, probably with on-site sessions in Heidelberg and Hinxton and virtually for all other EMBL sites, but we are open to discuss other arrangements depending on the number of attendees on each site.

Acknowledgments

Some modules of this programme are re-used from the ELIXIR-GOBLET Train the Trainers programme. This is possible because our communities implement the FAIR principles, which we advocate for in the training content.
